 Hurricane Irene

I am writing to express my profound gratitude for the generosity of all those involved with the helping of Hurricane Irene. Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragic event.

The outstanding success of the operation would not have been possible without the support of many individuals and organizations that were not only supportive but tireless and resourceful in their response. Any attempt to list everyone who contributed will undoubtedly omit someone, and for that I apologize in advance.

The leadership of the community of Lumberton Township was critical to setting the tone for those who were involved. The Lumberton Office of Emergency Management (OEM) was professional, efficient and always reachable. The Police Department, Fire Department, Emergency Squad and the Department of Public Works were fully engaged in responding to the needs of the people. Mayor Jim Conway and Police Liaison Mike Mansdoerfer helped lead the recovery efforts. The volunteerism brought out by concerned neighbors was particularly important as they helped others in need for their community and homes.

As we continue to work out of the depth of this event we acknowledge that there is still much to be done, but the skill of professionalism and heart demonstrated from the people of Lumberton is something that needs to be recognized.

Tony DiLoreto - Acting Chief of Police

THEFTS FROM AUTOS

One of the most common types of theft is theft of valuables from your automobile.  To help ensure your auto is not targeted by thieves here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  1. Lock Your Vehicle.  Always lock your car and take the keys, whether you're parking in a public lot or in your driveway- lock it up.
  2. Keep Your Valuables Out of Sight.  Take these items with you, or secure them out of sight in your trunk, if you have one, if not place them under the seat or in a locked glove compartment.
  3. Secure Your GPS Device.  While many GPS devices are mounted in the dashboard of the vehicle, we encourage anyone who uses a portable GPS device to take it with you, along with any other items of value, when you park the car.
  4. Remember: "Outta sight, outta mind" - if thieves can't see your valuables, they're less likely to waste their time targeting your auto.  Take time to secure your valuables; it makes a diference.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

  1. Use sidewalks where provided.
  2. Where no sidewalks are provided, walk facing traffic.
  3. When crossing the street used a marked crosswalk when possible, otherwise cross at an intersection.
  4. Use extra caution when crossing multiple-lane higher speed streets.
  5. Make eye contact with drivers when crossing busy streets.  Don't count on the driver to be paying attention.
  6. Make it easy for drivers to see you- dress in light colors or reflective material.  Carry a flashlight in very dark areas.
